Grimsby River Terminal – Torsion Arm Fender Supply

Project Overview:

Case Study: Grimsby River Terminal
Project: Grimsby River Terminal (Finger Pier)
Location: Port of Grimsby, UK
Date: Completed 2012

The Challenge: Complex Finger Pier Infrastructure

The Grimsby River Terminal required a highly specialized fendering and mooring solution for its new Finger Pier. To accommodate large-scale automotive carriers and ensure operational resilience in a tidal river environment, the project demanded a unique integrated design. The challenge was not just the supply of individual components, but the engineering of a cohesive system where the fenders, mooring equipment, and the pier’s structural piles worked in perfect unison.

The DockGuard Solution

DockGuard worked extensively with the main contractor and consultant from the initial concept design through to final installation. This project serves as a premier example of our ability to deliver large-scale, technically complex “Great British Engineering” solutions.

We provided a comprehensive suite of high-performance marine equipment, ensuring the terminal was equipped for the highest levels of safety and efficiency.

Key System Components:

18 Double Torsion Arm Fender Systems: These high-performance systems integrated both 1000H and 1100H Cone Fenders, designed to absorb massive berthing energies while maintaining stability during tidal fluctuations.

Specialist Mooring Equipment: To secure large vessels, we supplied 100T Mooring Bollards along with 100T Double and Quadruple Quick Release Hooks and free-standing capstans for controlled mooring operations.

Secondary Protection: The pier was further outfitted with 400 x 400 Hollow D Fenders for auxiliary vessel protection and edge safety.

Engineering Excellence: Pile Sleeves & X-Bracing

A standout feature of this project was DockGuard’s involvement in the structural steelwork. Beyond the rubber fenders, we designed and supplied the bespoke steel pile sleeves and X-braces.

Fabricated in British yards, these components were critical to the structural integrity of the finger pier, providing the necessary support and alignment for the Torsion Arm systems. By managing the fabrication of these pile interfaces, DockGuard ensured a “perfect fit” installation, reducing on-site risk and streamlining the construction phase.

Project Outcome

The Grimsby River Terminal project highlights DockGuard’s capability to handle significant, multi-million pound contracts where engineering, fabrication, and supply must be perfectly synchronized. The terminal is now fully operational, serving as a key hub for the UK’s automotive trade.

Our success at Grimsby demonstrates our deep experience with complex Torsion Arm systems and our ability to deliver fully integrated pile-supported solutions that go far beyond standard fender supply.
