The Challenge: Durable Protection in a Harsh Estuary Environment
Oikos Storage operates a major liquid bulk terminal on the Thames Estuary, a location characterized by high-salinity and a demanding berthing schedule for large tankers. The facility required a fendering upgrade that could provide maximum energy absorption while ensuring the long-term protection of the jetty structure. Key requirements included a solution that could withstand the corrosive marine environment and provide a “fit and forget” level of reliability to minimize operational downtime at this critical energy hub..
The DockGuard Solution
DockGuard engineered and supplied a bespoke suite of Parallel Motion Torsion Arm systems. Unlike standard fender arrangements, these systems were designed to handle the high energy of large vessel arrivals while maintaining a perfectly flat contact face against the hull. Given the location, a specialized coating was a primary requirement to prevent premature corrosion.

Large-Scale Frontal Panels: 2400mm x 8450mm fabricated steel panels, providing a massive contact area to distribute berthing pressure safely.
Glass Flake Paint System: A high-spec, multi-coat marine finish chosen for its exceptional resistance to abrasion and chemical corrosion in the Thames Estuary.
UHMW-PE Facing: 50mm thick, 1000-grade low-friction pads to ensure smooth vessel sliding and reduced shear force on the jetty.
Engineering Highlight: The Parallel Motion Advantage
At the heart of the Hole Haven installation is the Parallel Motion Torsion Arm. This mechanism ensures that the 8.4-meter-high frontal panels remain vertical throughout the entire compression stroke. By preventing the panel from tilting or twisting—even during an angular berthing—the energy is shared equally between the two DCN1400 cone fenders. This maximizes the efficiency of the rubber and ensures the vessel hull never experiences localized high-pressure points, a critical safety factor when handling liquid bulk cargo.
Project Outcome
Delivered within the 20-week schedule, the systems were successfully installed at Hole Haven Wharf and have been in continuous operation ever since. The combination of heavy-duty torsion arm mechanics and the specialized glass flake coating has proven highly effective; the systems have required minimal maintenance despite the high-frequency use and the corrosive environment of the estuary. This project highlights DockGuard’s ability to provide long-life engineering solutions for the most demanding sectors of the maritime industry.
