The Challenge: Enhancing Malta’s Maritime Gateway
The Deep Water Quay in Marsa is a vital component of Malta’s maritime infrastructure, supporting a high volume of commercial and industrial vessel traffic. To maintain operational safety and accommodate modern vessel requirements, a full-scale replacement of the existing fendering was commissioned. The project required a high-performance, durable solution that could be delivered as a complete turnkey package—from initial engineering to final on-site commissioning.
The DockGuard Solution
DockGuard was selected to manage the full scope of Design, Supply, and Installation for the project. Our solution was centered on the DCN 1000 Cone Fender System, chosen for its exceptional energy absorption capabilities and stable performance even under large compression angles.
Key System Components:
33 DCN 1000 Cone Fender Systems: Each unit was engineered to provide 475 kNm of energy absorption with a reaction force of 834 kN.
Fabricated Steel Panels: Robust closed-box panels were designed to distribute berthing loads efficiently, keeping hull pressures below the required 150 kN/m².
Low-Friction Facing: 70mm thick, 1000-grade black UHMW-PE pads were utilized to ensure smooth vessel contact and reduce wear on both the fender and the ship’s hull.
Integrated Chain Systems: Each system included high-grade shear and weight chains to manage the panel’s vertical and lateral loads during berthing.
Innovation in Design: Super Duplex Resilience
A standout technical feature of the Marsa project was the specification of Stainless Steel Super Duplex for the primary fender anchors. While standard galvanized steel is often the industry default, DockGuard recommended Super Duplex to provide maximum resistance against the aggressive Mediterranean splash zone.
This material choice significantly reduced the risk of pitting and crevice corrosion, ensuring that the structural connection between the fenders and the quay wall remains secure for decades. By integrating these high-spec anchors with Grade 8.8 HDG secondary fixings, we delivered a balanced, cost-effective, yet high-endurance solution.
